TVDinner is a public art project by OtherIS, curated by Sandra Skurvida in collaboration with Tania Brugueraʼs Immigrant Movement International, presented by Creative Time and Queens Museum of Art

Project contact: July 30 – November 30, 2011, multiple venues, New York

Video selections and venues TBA

OtherIS and Immigrant Movement International are pleased to announce TVDinner, a public art project in New York City from July 30th through November 2011. It features video selections from the US sanctioned countries (Belarus, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Myanmar/Burma, and Zimbabwe) on TV sets at restaurants and cafes that serve food of these countries, highlighting the immigrant experience that so often revolves around food, bringing the distant closer and making the strange familiar through communal consumption of food and art. Dinner parties with artists, writers, and others will be held at selected restaurants during the projectʼs run, and streamed online. During launch event on July 30th video selections will be screened, with special projects and appearances by participating artists and special guests, and food from participating restaurants served at IMI headquarters. You are invited.

TVDinner is an iteration of BBCCCIILNSSSZ///// - a database of video art from and in relation to the US- sanctioned countries, including Belarus, Cote d'Ivoire, Congo, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Myanmar/Burma, and Zimbabwe. An open call has been issued for each country; and guest curators are invited to engage the context of their expertise. Open call entries and curated selections shall be both featured at the presentations of BBCCCIILNSSSZ///// at galleries and museums around the world, in their countries of origin and elsewhere, as well as online. As of June 2011, guest-curators of OtherIS are Lena Prents (Belarus); Shireen Naziree (Burma); Amirali Ghasemi and Sohrab Kashani (Iran); Aneta Szylak and Hiwa K. (Iraq-Kurdistan); Yu Yeon Kim (North Korea); and Abir Boukhari (Syria).

OtherIS succeeds SanctionedArray — a project by SpecifyOthers produced in response to the Guggenheim Museum and YouTube's restrictions placed on video submissions from the US sanctioned countries to the Play biennial 2010; SanctionedArray was presented at White Box gallery and Big Screen Project in New York City in October-November 2010 and at March Meeting 2011 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
